The JID is a scholarly and inter-disciplinary platform for raising the profile of internally displaced persons through discussions, critical dialogue, emerging themes, reflections and explorations on a wide range of topics and regions around the globe.
The complex and diverse nature of internal displacement has created a serious controversies and ideologies around who, when and how to protect IDPs. Apart from the lack of legally binding instruments on internal displacement, the UN has not assigned a specific unit to deal with global IDP concerns, except for an ad hoc discretionary position, the Representative of the Secretary General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons, created and appointed by the UN Secretary General. Consequently, the protection and assistance of internally displaced persons have been criticized for being disorganized and problematic. It is agsint this backdrop that the first ever online Journal of Internal Displacement was born.
