Author Guidelines

Journal of Contemporary English Teaching and Learning in Non-English-Speaking Countries (CETL) considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Journal CETL, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Journal CETL incurs and their papers will not be published.

Contributions to the journal must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office.

General guidelines

  • UK spelling (e.g. colour, organise) and punctuation are preferred (single quotation marks with double within if needed). However papers will be accepted in both American and British English. Consistency throughout the paper is expected.
  • Articles need to be written in English. All articles should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 150 words and 4-6 relevant keyword.
  • All pages should be numbered and footnotes avoided if possible.
  • Articles should not normally exceed 8,000 words, including abstract, references, and tables. Papers that greatly exceed this will be critically reviewed with respect to length. Please include a word count at the beginning of their papers.
  • This journal requires a short paragraph of bibliographical details for all contributors.
  • For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
  • Please compile manuscripts in the following order: Title; abstract; keywords; main text; references; appendixes (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list). If acknowledgements are required, these should be included only after the paper has been refereed, to maintain anonymity.
  • When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, please use the symbol ® or TM.

Style guidelines

Article style quick guide:

  • Layout: Normal MS Word A4 page layout, one column, top and bottom margin to be 2.54cm, left and right 3.18cm, 1.5 line space.
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 point.
  • Title: Bold with capital letter for each word
  • Authors’ names: Give the names of all contributing authors on the title page in format of ‘initials.family name’ e.g. W.H.Smith; use and between authors if more than one.
  • Affiliations: List the affiliation of each author (department, university, city, country) if you wish.
  • Correspondence details: Please provide an email address for the corresponding author. Full postal details are also needed by the publisher, but will not necessarily be published.
  • Abstract: please use font Times New Roman 11, and increase indent by 2 unites on both ends.
  • Keywords: Please provide 4 - 6 keywords to help readers find your article.
  • Headings: Please indicate the level of the section headings in your article:
    • First-level headings (e.g. Introduction, Conclusion) should be in bold, with an initial capital letter for any proper nouns.
    • Second-level headings should be in bold italics, with an initial capital letter for any proper nouns.
    • Third-level headings should be in italics, with an initial capital letter for any proper nouns.
    • Fourth-level headings should also be in italics, at the beginning of a paragraph. The text follows immediately after a full stop (full point) or other punctuation mark.
    • Punctuations: Use double quotation marks with single within if needed.

Tables and figures:

  • Indicate in the text by inserting for example (Table 1). The actual tables and figures should be supplied closeby.
  • Ensure you have permission to use any figures you are reproducing from another source.
  • It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.
  • Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), or PostScript, and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Citation:

  • Reference order: References are cited in the text in alphabetical order (the same way they appear in the reference list), separated by a semi-colon (Green, 2002; Harlow, 1983).If you have two authors with the same last name, use first initials with the last names. (E. Johnson, 2001; L. Johnson, 1998).

 

  • A work by one or two authors: Name both authors in the signal phrase or in the parentheses each time you cite the work. Use the word ‘and’ between the authors’ names within the text and use ‘&’ in the parentheses.

E.g., Research by Wegener and Petty (1994) showed... (Wegener & Petty, 1994)

 

  • A work by three or more authors: List all the authors in the signal phrase or in parentheses the first time you cite the source. (Kernis, Cornell, Sun, Berry, & Harlow, 1993)...In subsequent citations, only use the first author’s last name followed by et al. in the signal phrase or in parentheses (Kernis et al., 1993).

  • The names of groups that serve as authors (e.g. govt agencies or corporations): can be spelled out each time they appear in a text citation unless it is long or cumbersome, in which case spell it out only the first time and abbreviate it thereafter.

E.g., first citation in text: National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH, 2003), Subsequent citations:NIMH (2003)

  • Several works by same author: use lower-case letters (a, b, c) with the year to order the entries in the reference list. Use the lower-case letters with the year in the in-text citation.

E.g., Research by Green (1981a, 1981b) illustrated that...

 

  • Citing indirect sources: name the original source in signal phrase. List the secondary source in your reference list and include the secondary source in the parentheses.

E.g., Johnson argued that... (as cited in Smith, 2003, p. 102).

 

  • Work discussed in a secondary source: List the source the work was discussed in.

E.g., In Seidenberg and McClelland’s study (as cited in Coltheart, Curtis, Atkins, & Haller, 1993), ...

Reference Style quick guide:

References should be listed in alphabetical order. APA (American Psychological Association) references are used in the journal CETL. Following are the most commonly used references provided as a quick guide to contributors, an example has been given to each style wherever possible. Manuscript submission

All submissions should be emailed to the managing editor at book@cubel.co.uk until otherwise advised. Manuscripts are preferably be submitted in Word format. Please supply a valid email address when submitting a book for review as an electronic file will be sent on publication. All other guidelines regarding submissions apply.

 

Proposals: Journal CETL welcome submission of article proposals of roughly 250 words when you are planning your article.

 

Manuscripts: Once manuscript is prepared, please submit TWO versions of your work:

  1. ‘File not for review’: This should be a complete text including all identifying information, author contact details, email and postal address and brief biographical notes. If the paper is accepted, these will be published.
  2. ‘File for review’: this document must not contain any identifying information so that it can be sent for blind review. Please take care to remove all identical information about you as the author and your references to your institution (replace with XX University).

Supplementary online material: Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.

Reproduction of copyright material:

Contributors are required to secure permission for the reproduction of any figure, table or extensive extract (more than fifty words) from the text of a source that is copyrighted or owned by a party or the contributor. This applies to direct reproduction as well as ‘derivative reproduction', where the contributor has created a new figure or table that derives substantially from a copyrighted source. Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).

Copyright and authors' rights

It is a condition o.f publication that authors assign copyright or licence the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to UniBravo Publishing. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from UniBravo Publishing, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as the original source of publication, and that UniBravo Publishing is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Proofs will be sent to authors in PDF format if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Publisher within 7 days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.

After publication, corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through the journal website and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article.

 

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
